Ridgewell´s late strike frustrates Tottenham

January 31, 2010

Birmingham defender Liam Ridgewell frustrated Tottenham’s push for the Champions League as his last-gasp equaliser earned a 1-1 draw at St Andrew’s on Saturday.

Jermain Defoe looked to have consolidated Tottenham’s position in fourth place with a 69th-minute strike — his first Premier League goal of 2010.

But Birmingham avoided a second successive defeat when defender Ridgewell stole in at the far post to volley home in the last minute.

The draw left Tottenham just one point ahead of Liverpool as the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League hots up.

The only consolation for Harry Redknapp is the confirmation that defender Younes Kaboul will re-sign from Portsmouth in a five million pounds (5.8 million euros) deal that could save his former club from slipping into administration.

Birmingham’s recent form has been so impressive that Alex McLeish’s players, furious at losing for the first time in 16 games, reportedly confronted each other in the Stamford Bridge visitors’ dressing room in the aftermath of their 3-0 loss at Chelsea on Wednesday.

However, far from damaging the tremendous spirit that has made Birmingham a revelation this season, that defeat did not appear to have affected McLeish’s players.

Lee Bowyer almost gave the home side a fourth-minute lead when he was teed up by James McFadden but he shot straight at Heurelho Gomes.

Christian Benitez, the Ecuador international striker, bamboozled Michael Dawson on the edge of the area before sending a tame shot right into the arms of Tottenham’s keeper.

There was no Roman Pavyluchenko in the Spurs team for this encounter, with Birmingham’s second bid of nine million pounds for the Russian international reportedly having been turned down by Redknapp.

But David Bentley remained in the team after his impressive performance, and goal, against Fulham.

And the midfielder produced Spurs’ first genuine chance in the 34th minute when he cut inside and drove in a shot that was clawed around the post by Joe Hart.

Bentley also came close to shattering the boredom of a tedious game early in the second half when Gareth Bale’s cross eluded the Birmingham defence to find the England international, but his shot was kept out by Hart.

Spurs somehow failed to take the lead in the 57th minute. Defoe danced past a hesitant home defence and lost balance as he prepared to shoot, the ball rolling into the path of Peter Crouch who inexplicably placed his shot wide.

It did galvanise the visitors, however, and they forced a succession of corners as they battled for the opener.

And they finally secured the goal their steady pressure deserved when an unmarked Defoe lashed in Bale’s cross in the 69th minute.

Yet Birmingham pushed desperately for an equaliser and finally earned it through Ridgewell’s finish from Cameron Jerome’s flick.

Yeung´s Birmingham takeover a boon for China

September 16, 2009

Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung’s planned takeover of Premier League side Birmingham City is set to provide a massive shot in the arm for China’s beleaguered football players.

The billionaire is expected to complete his 130 million US dollar purchase of the club in the next three weeks after formally lodging a bid by sending out official offer documents to other shareholders on Tuesday.

He already owns 29.9 percent of the team and co-owners David Sullivan and the Gold brothers, David and Ralph, have indicated they will sell their 50 percent stake.

If he reaches a 90 percent stake that will then trigger the compulsory purchase of the remaining shares, which is Yeung’s declared objective.

But he also has another objective — helping develop Chinese football.

“Over the past 10 years China has had its sports boosted, but there has been no development for football,” Yeung told British reporters when lodging the takeover bid.

“So I would like to make my humble contribution. In the future, when the team is stabilised, we will recruit Chinese players who have potential.

“My biggest wish is to bring the English Premier League club to China, promote English professionalism and football concepts to the Chinese, and to let the Chinese know how a English football team is managed.”

Chinese football has long needed a saviour.

Despite being a country of 1.3 billion people, the national team has repeatedly underachieved, qualifying only once for the World Cup finals when they reached the 2002 tournament in Japan and Korea.

They crashed out of qualification for the 2010 World Cup at the first hurdle and are currently on their seventh coach since 2000.

Few Chinese players have successfully made a switch to Europe, with national captain Zheng Zhi one of the few exceptions, recently signing for Scottish powerhouse Celtic after three years at Charlton Athletic.

The mission to cure China’s football ills would reportedly include building a dedicated school, inviting Chinese coaches to St Andrew’s and even offering Birmingham as a base for the national team before big tournaments.

In a recent interview with Britain’s Daily Telegraph, Vico Hui, chief executive of Grandtop International, Yeung’s investment vehicle which has launched the takeover attempt, made clear China would be a beneficiary.

“We will become the first Chinese owners of a club in the Premier League. Our business will be idolised. We will be bringing glory to the Chinese people,” he told the newspaper.

“China has a huge market. We will try to promote the business. We may talk to the management about swapping players between China and the United Kingdom to improve Chinese football technique.”

Shareholders have until October 6 to accept the offer, which is being funded by a 57-million-pound bridging loan pending the completion of a planned share issue at the Hong Kong-listed Grandtop International.

Yeung first attempted to seize control of the club in 2007 but failed, triggering the departure of highly-rated manager Steve Bruce mid-way through a season that ended in relegation.

They were promoted back to the top flight last season.

Bowyer set to play for Blues

July 8, 2009

English midfielder Lee Bowyer, could become Birmingham City’s latest and seventh signing of the summer.

The former Leeds United player is set to join the Blues from West Ham on a free transfer, following a successful loan spell at St Andrew’s during the second half of last season.

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish has focused in bringing veterans to his central field after blooding in new players up front and in defence.

With the manager impressed by the player’s impact in helping to City return to thePremier League at the first attempt, the move couldn’t have been far away and McLeish confirmed the player’s allegiance to the City’s cause.

McLeish confirmed: “I don’t know if the Is and Ts have been formally dotted and crossed but Lee has pledged his allegiance to Birmingham.”

“He will become a permanent Birmingham player and a worthy addition to our squad. He did well for us last season.”

While Bowyer has been involved in his fair share of controversy during his career but his experience would be invaluable in helping Birmingham’s bid to become established in the top flight.

Stephen Carr, Scott Dann, Roger Johnson, Joe Hart, Giovanny Espinoza and record signing Christian Benitez have all joined Blues during the close season.

And McLeish intimated he has been promised further backing by the board.

He said: “I have several names in mind for the crucial midfield positions.”

“I know what I am looking for in the team and the board have pledged their support to back me in this.”
