Lisbon sides victorious in Portugal

Oscar Cardozo scored Benfica's only goal
Benfica restored their advantage over Sporting Braga in the Portuguese league with a 0-1 win at Nacional on Sunday.

After Braga’s 1-0 win over Rio Ave a day earlier, Benfica needed a win as well to maintain their three-points advantage over their nearest rivals.

The Lisbon outfit played away to Nacional in the city of Funchal, and a 64th-minute goal from Oscar Cardozo was enough to secure the victory and three valuable points.

Sporting Lisbon remain on course for a Europa League spot following a 3-1 win over Vitoria Guimaraes. Leandro Grimi and Liedson gave the hosts a 2-0 lead within nine minutes, and Carlos Saleiro added a third with just 20 minutes played.

Valdomiro pulled one back for Vitoria in the 66th minute but Sporting held on to their lead to successfully defend their fourth place.

Sporting Braga suffer first defeat in Portugal

November 8, 2009

Sporting Braga finally suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 1-0 at Vitoria Guimaraes.

Having won eight of their nine previous matches, the remaining ending undecided, Braga were expected to do equally well at Vitoria.

But it wasn’t meant to be for the Portuguese leaders, as the only goal of the match came from Vitoria’s Yves Desmarets in the 30th minute.

Braga risk having to share their lead with Benfica after the Lisbon outfit host Naval 1° de Maio on Monday.

Brazil: Atletico Mineiro close on Palmeiras

October 25, 2009

Atletico Mineiro kept championship hopes alive in the Brazilian Serie A, with a 1-0 win over Vitoria on Saturday.

Two days after Palmeiras’ surprising 2-0 defeat by Santo Andre, Atletico Mineiro knew that a win in their game allowed them to reduce the gap with the leaders to just one point.

A goal from Diego Tardelli in the 28th minute was enough for Mineiro to achieve exactly that. Vitoria tried to do something back but weren’t helped by a second yellow card for Leandro late on.

International and Sao Paulo, both currently five points behind Palmeiras, play on Sunday and face Gremio and Santos respectively.

Sporting beat Vitoria, Benfica held

May 10, 2009

The Portuguese championship won’t be officially decided this week as Sporting Lisbon did what they needed to do to beat Vitoria Setubal 2-1. Benfica were held by CD Trofense.

Liedson was the one to lead Sporting to this 2-1 victory over Vitoria, scoring the opening goal on 26 minutes and netting the winner near full time. That second goal was needed as Bruno Gama equalised for the visitors in minute 37.

Porto, who host Nacional Funchal on Sunday, could restore their six-points gap with two games to go and although their comfortable goal record would mean that the championship is in the pocket, it would not be official just yet.

Benfica failed to earn more than a point from their match with Trofense. Oscar Cardozo scored both home goals, while the guests scored through Valdomiro and Paulinho.
